Q: What is caving?
A: Caving is the recreational sport of exploring wild (generally non-commercial) cave systems, it is also known as spelunking or potholing in other countries.
Q: What is speleology?
A: Speleology is the scientific study of caves and the cave environment.
Q: Is it safe?
A: Each cave system is unique and this influences its safety. Simple rules can be followed to ensure one's safety. Never cave alone, always inform someone of your intended route and return time. Research the cave systems making special note of entrance and exits and always use your common sense. For further information feel free to contact us and we will help as best we can.
Q: Whom do I contact in case of an emergency?
A: Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) on 10177 or 021 937 0300.
Q: What equipment do I need?
A: While caves can be explored in old cloths and with a torch. A decent headlamp, spare batteries, a helmet, gloves, overalls and a good set of boots is recommended.
Q: What is SRT?
A: Single Rope Technique (SRT) is a set of methods used to descend and ascend on the same single rope. SRT is used in caving, potholing, rock climbing, canyoning, roped access for building maintenance and by arborists for tree climbing.
Q: Do I need to be a member of the club in order to go on one of the club meets?
A: No, we always welcome visitors to join us on a few meets, there is no charge to join us on a day out of caving.
